Chapter Thirty-Four.

A little while later Danny stands just outside the hotel watching several Cleaners load a restrained and unconscious 4XM into the back of their unmarked white van. He’s badly injured from the fall but he’ll heal, way faster than Louis and Danny would without Lauren’s help.

“You look terrible.” Amber says as she joins him. Her still wet hair is scraped back so that it’s out of her face and her clothes are still drying, but she’s right, she looks a lot better than he does right now. She jabs him in the ribs.

“Ow!” He cries. “Maybe if you’d spent less time swimming we could’ve wrapped it up a little sooner.” He retorts.

“Yeah. Maybe.” She agrees with a laugh. Danny nods towards Chris who’s still ordering people around in the distance, trying to take control of the carnage. “He survived then.” He says.

“Yep. Healed up in enough time to at least try to take the glory for this.”

“Good. He’s going to be so annoyed we did it without him. I’d hate for him to have missed it.” Danny says, with a playful grin at the thought of Chris scrambling to explain how this was all his doing.

“I’m annoyed I missed it!” She protests, “But, you did good.”

“Thanks.” Danny says, and he looks past the group of people directly in front of them to one lone figure who’s sitting on a bench on his own across the street. Amber follows his gaze to Louis. “It was…some of it, anyway. He wasn’t totally useless is what I’m saying.”

“Maybe we have been too hard on him.” She says, and they share a mischievous look.

“Or maybe we just inspired him to be better.” Danny offers and she laughs again.

“Yes. That’s the one.” She confirms.

“We did it though, and this was an important one. But…” he says, and he’s hesitant to continue. There’s something else on his mind. The one bit of information they’d held back from the others. “He wasn’t alone. We got a message…last week…after what happened at the hospital. A warning.”

“What?” She snaps, furious that he’s kept that back.

“It was a woman. Said she was the one who killed Alex, and Rachel.” He explains.

“Why’re you just telling me this now?” She demands.

“I don’t know. I’m sorry.” He says, and she jabs him in the ribs again and he winces.

“You and me, we don’t keep stuff from each other. What did it say?”

“It said…it was a threat to leave them alone. And…this…is the opposite of leaving them alone.” He tells her. He’s right. Hunting and capturing 4XM was definitely not doing what the mysterious woman had told them to do.

“To the next one, then…” Amber says.

“Run a little bit faster next time?” he asks.

“Don’t start without me next time!” She demands.

“Deal.”

“I’m glad you’re okay.” She tells her friend.

“Yeah. Me too.” He says. And she rests her head on his shoulder affectionately as the two of them watch the van leave, hoping they’re able to put this behind them and return to normality. Unfortunately, as they’d soon realise, this was nowhere near the end.
